Rehabilitating Stroke Patients In A Pain And Stroke Rehab Centre

Stroke: An overview of symptoms, causes and treatments

Stroke is a medical emergency in which the brain undergoes severe damage due to interrupted blood supply. The condition is attributed to a long history of risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation and of course, obesity. Symptoms of stroke can range from trouble in walking, challenges in speech & understanding as well as paralysis of leg, arms, and face. Although early intervention and prevention of risk factors are the best way to avoid the possibilities of stroke, post-stroke treatments involving minimizing complications and preventing further strokes are also provided to the stroke victims. Pain and stroke rehab centre offers their patients numerous rehabilitation treatments that help them to relearn the skills lost during the severe stroke and bring back the quality of life. Learn more about the causes and symptoms of stroke, along with the various rehabilitation programs.

What is stroke, and what are its risk factors?

Stroke is of two types. An ischemic stroke is caused due to the negligent supply of blood supply to the brain. It happens when there is a blockage in the blood vessel to the brain. Whereas, a hemorrhagic stroke is the continuous bleeding in and around the brain. Both these conditions affect the normal functioning of the brain and severely disabling motor skills and communication & thinking abilities. Although risk factors like high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, atrial fibrillation and smoking are controllable, there are several risk factors like age, gender, or race which cannot be changed. Here are a few facts that can also be the reasons for an impending stroke.

  • It is found that stroke chances double at an age above 55, irrespective of genders.

  • Women are more susceptible to stroke, as pregnancy and birth control medications increase the chances of stroke.

  • If the family has a history of stroke, then the possibilities of stroke rise manifold.

  • The transient ischemic attack, a prior stroke, or heart attack increases the risk of having a stroke.

Symptoms

Stroke consequences can be significantly minimized if a timely response is provided when confronted with the symptoms. Hence, if you witness your acquaintances exhibiting the following signs, then you must seek emergency medical assistance.

Stroke victims are likely to feel numbness or weakness on one side of the body, especially in the face, legs and arms. This may also cause loss of balance, and coordination making it extremely difficult to walk. Slurred speech, difficulty in understanding, blurry vision and severe headaches

are the most prominent symptoms of stroke that must be addressed immediately.

Treatment and rehabilitation for stroke victims

Ischemic strokes are treated by dissolving blood clots and hemorrhagic strokes are treated by stopping the bleeding. The treatments are mostly catheter or IV based treatments, and minimally invasive surgeries remove the extreme clots. However, the best stroke treatment is prevention. Keeping the risk factors like high BP, diabetes and high cholesterol in tab by following a healthy diet and proper exercise can reduce the risk of stroke to a great extent.

Stroke rehabilitation involves many physical and technologically assisted activities to help the patients regain their lost skills. The physical activity includes mobility training with mobility aids, motor skills exercises, constraint-induced therapy and range of motion therapy. Mechanical and electrical stimulation is widely used in technology-assisted physical therapy sessions.
